DSIP in chronic insomnia: weak objective signals and unchanged subjective sleep

The small controlled trial concluded that short-term clinical benefit was unlikely to be substantial.

Clinical trialPaper year: 1992DSIP

01 / DESIGN

What was studied?

Sixteen people with chronic insomnia entered a double-blind matched-pairs study over several laboratory nights. Investigators assessed sleep structure, polysomnography, subjective sleep quality and tiredness.

02 / FINDINGS

What did the researchers report?

Some objective measures favored DSIP, but the effects were weak and partly attributable to an incidental change in the placebo group. Most measures, including subjective sleep quality, did not change. The authors did not regard the pattern as a major therapeutic benefit.

03 / LIMITS

How should it be interpreted?

This is an old, very small study with a short observation period. Selected favorable measurements should not obscure the overall conclusion. It does not establish a current insomnia treatment, durable benefit or safety of research-supply materials.
